Internet Safety Considerations
Responsible computing was not specifically addressed at Computers in Libraries 2006. However, with all the Internet tools highlighted in this wiki, we wanted to include something about it here.
There are many free online applications to help you create your blogs, wikis, podcasts, etc., but are they all created equal? Not necessarily. Don't worry, there are plenty of free, safe online tools for you to use as you develop your virtual libraries, but use some discretion and investigate before deciding on a particular tool. Get recommendations from reliable sources and be sure to check out the terms of service for any "free" service.
As you are all aware, Internet safety is a hot topic around the country and with good reason. You are sure to read about how different states are dealing with this issue. For example, starting July 1, 2006, all public schools in the State of Virginia are required to teach students about Internet safety. You can read about it in this Washington Post article. Will teaching Internet safety become the school library's next mandate? Wouldn't every school administrator like to know that this issue is being addressed responsibly in their school?
Remember, too, you may not be able to do everything you would like to do from a technical standpoint. Not all schools have limitless bandwidths and all of them employ filtering software. But don't despair, school districts are working hard to upgrade their systems and if you develop a good working relationship with your IT department, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Also, help them out by being familiar with your school's Acceptable Use Policy and Procedures.
