Alice Yucht, Consultant, Writer, Teacher, and Lifelong Librarian, from Highland Park, New Jersey, gave an entertaining presentation that she also refers to as “Guerrilla Marketing to Promote Library Services.” This fits into two of our categories: Calls to Action and Tools You Can Use. In her online tutorial she explains why it is imperative for you to start your own Bloglines account today and gives detailed instructions on how to go about it. While her tutorial explains all about blogs and blogging, she focuses on blog-reading as opposed to blog-writing.

As information brokers of the 21st century, today’s librarians need the best tools to streamline acquisition and dispersion of knowledge. A blog aggregator is a great place to start because it allows you to scan the latest news and online sites quickly and is tailored exactly to your needs.

So, we encourage you to go NOW to her online tutorial because:

• Once you dip your toe in the water, you will jump in.

• She will get you started with excellent resources. You will quickly figure out which blogs to keep, which to delete, and how to find others. Add and subtract feeds at will.

• If you include some just for fun, you can start every day with a smile.

• You only have to read what and when you want. Don’t have time today? Not a problem. Unlike e-mail subscriptions, your inbox will not become clogged with messages. In fact you can have your e-zines and newsletters sent to your Bloglines account as well. Articles are always available, can be scanned quickly, and shared easily. This should be a tool to make your life easier.

• Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all your friends who fill your inbox with well-intentioned stories and “jokes” instead posted them to their blog that you could choose to read (or not) at your leisure thereby decluttering your inbox!
